Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation

Mission:

The Youth Life Foundation’s mission is to help children develop into leaders who positively influence their families and communities.  We achieve our mission through the Darrell Green Learning Centers by providing services that nurture the child, strengthen the family, and rebuild the community.

Each child enrolled in the center participates in the development of their personal GPA (Goals, Plan, and Assessment). Each child has a GPA team that includes the student, parent/guardian, school teacher, and the DGLC educator. The team identifies goals; develops a comprehensive plan that will provide the tasks that must be accomplished to meet the goals; and following the assessment evaluates the progress being made toward the goals.

When a child attends the Learning Center, approximately two hours per visit are spent working towards meeting the goals outlined in the GPA. This component of the program also includes one hour of homework assistance which integrates computer-based education programs and the latest educational software and technology to make learning fun.

The GPA is constantly monitored on the DG GPA web-based data system. Every student is entered along with all pertinent information along with a picture of the student. The GPA is updated at least once every six weeks just as the GPA is reviewed to ensure progress is being made. If, during the review, it is noted that progress is not being made, then the plan must be modified. In modifying the plan, a detailed description of the observations are duly noted along with the steps that will be taken to improve progress.

During each six week cycle, the DGLC educator is required to visit each student's school at least once, communicate and coordinate with the regular school teacher and parents regarding the student's progress. This communication is documented in the web-based data system and is accessible by the Director of Learning Centers.

Each Learning Center is staffed with one lead educator, educators and/or educational assistant based on a 15:1 student/teacher ratio. The Darrell Green Learning Centers employ full-time, highly qualified education professionals.

Although our program targets youth, we also provide services to the parents and other adults within the community that have an impact on the lives of the children. Adults in the program have access to classes and programs that are developed around the needs of the community.
